This article is an extension of a more general one that you can find here .

As described by OpenLayers‘ develpers “OpenLayers is a pure JavaScript library for displaying map data in most modern web browsers. OpenLayers implements a (still-developing) Javascript API for building rich web-based geographic applications, similar to the Google Maps and MSN Virtual Earth APIs, with one important difference — OpenLayers is Free Software, developed for and by the Open Source software community. OpenLayers supports implements most of the industry-standard methods for geographic data access, such as the OpenGIS Consortium’s Web Mapping Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) protocols.“.

At Involutive we have developed an online multiuser strategic browsergame called WarWide (it’s still in heavy development and only for italian players, even if an english version will arrive soon) that integrates OpenLayers. This could be very useful to display all sort of gaming data: cities, armies, movements and paths…

and why not… it increases WarWide’s 2.0 look !

Each release of OpenLayers comes with new interesting features that helps us to improve our game, giving to players new tools for an improved gaming experience and for a better strategic feeling.
